Deer, Head, Deer, Head

I found out Saturday what happens when a 96 VW Jetta going 65 mph gets attacked by a 150 pound deer.

This happens

The deer ran up onto the road surface at which time I hit my brakes and slid about 50 feet.

had the deer kept running in a straight line, it would have run in front of me and easily gotten past me. Did the deer do that? Nope, upon hearing the brakes squeal, it turned and ran toward me.

It struck the driver's side front fender, did a complete 180 degree turn and it's head smashed through the window on my side and hit me in the head. I was too busy trying not to put the car in the ditch and roll that I wasn't paying much attention to this. Deb reported this to me later. I just felt something hit me in the head and saw glass explode inward from the window.

I think at that point the back leg came up and hit the windshield and broke it.

After that, I'm pretty sure the deer went under the car and got thrown into the ditch on the opposite side of the road. The car skidded off into the near side of the road/ditch. I shook my head and a cascade of broken glass fell from my hair and I could feel glass in my skull. I asked deb if she was OK and she was. I tried to get out my door and it would not open. So Deb got out and I crawled out her door. It was then I saw the deer get up out of the ditch and go flailing back across the road with an obviously broken back leg and head into the woods.

I yelled some expletive and ran after it with my hunting knife which I just happened to have on my belt. I didn't want it to suffer and knew it was not going to survive with a broken leg and most likely internal injuries. But the woods are deep and extensive there and I soon lost it. So cursing, I headed back.

We took stock of the damage and determined that it was drivable. Thank goodness it was a warm day with no rain since I now had no window. We were about 30 miles from the farm. When we got there, I had Deb take tweezers and dig the glass out of my head. Then I called the insurance company. They were impressed that this was the first claim I had filed in 20 years. They said an adjuster would be out by Wednesday but in all likelihood it will be a total loss. I drove it to Deb's dad's glass store in Macomb where it sits now inside the shop to keep it out of the rain. If the insurance decides it can be repaired, he will do the glass work for me.

He called around and found a collision specialist who can get started right away. Now I'm just waiting to hear from the Insurance company. I can tell it will need a new fender, door, glass, windshield, bumper, front spoiler and strut (which actually broke). They may well total it. If so, I may buy it back and fix it myself or I found a 97 Jetta up here in Chicago. Same color and half the mileage that I might buy instead. At 38 mpg though, I really don't want to give it up.

Peace,

Wander

I'm glad you are taking care of the car but I hope you also took care of the glass in your head.

It's a shame you weren't able to dispatch the deer.

It wasn't going to go far but it went far enough. I suppose i could have tracked it had everything else not been going on. I hated like Hell not to be able to put it down.

Glad you guys are okay. That's...not as bad as I was expecting. I thought there would be a smashed up car under the first picture.

I was pretty surprised it didn't do more damage as loud as the impact was. Good thing it wasn't a bigger deer.

Yikes! Glad you're both okay, too bad about the deer. Hope you can salvage the Jetta, 38 mpg is worth keeping!

Yeah, I really hope so too. I think if the woods had been flat ground, I could have seen where the deer stopped. As it was, I was pretty much following a trail as soon as I got in the woods and after the tree line it turns into a maze of hollows and ridges so I was SOL.

WOW! I am so glad you and Deb came out of it ok. It could have been really bad (as if it wasn't bad enough I know)
That was very good of you to try to chase the deer down. Most people wouldn't think to have such mercy.

Just a though.. you might want to blank out your plate # on that pic. So no cyber stalker can look you up.

*hugs*

They want to come out the the farm and find me, they are welcome to. Lots of room to bury bodies out there. Seriously though, I'm forever giving out my address and phone online. There are easier ways to stalk me than chasing down my plates.

I've certainly had worse deer collisions. Other critters as well so I was pretty lucky. wish I could have found the deer though.

I hit one last month. It was sudden and scary. I am glad you are OK. Sorry about your car.
The good news is deer accidents are generally considered no-fault and don't raise your premiums.

Yeah, the insurance claims rep didn't really bat an eye about it. I just hope they will fix it.

Thanks. I'm actually surprised this is only the second deer I've hit. Considering all the driving I do.

Other than the car, that's what I feel worst about. I hate knowing animals are suffering and I had something to do with it.

I hate driving home (Pike Co, Il.) for this very reason. The deer are thick. I thought about getting one of those deer whistles for my car.

Those are more comfort for humans than anything. Deer don't really care about them. Deer are a big hazard in this part of the world. This was Fulton County by the way, 2 counties over from Pike.

Sorry this bit of luck befell you, man. It makes me concider myself lucky, with the memory one year of almost hitting a fully grown bear coming up out of a bar ditch.

I swear Colorado is the worst for hitting wildlife. I barely missed a bighorn sheep over by Salida a few years back.

Thanks!

Just another day in Paradise. I swear the deer have gotten so thick lately all over the midwest. I think there were like 22,000 deer collisions in Illinois alone last year.

Is it so wrong of me to feel worse for the deer? Being that neither of you were hurt and, well, it is only a car.
Seriously - yuck, OW, suck-y!

I keep telling everyone that deer are suicidal, but they don't believe me.
I'm glad to hear that you are ok!

Ooof I'm glad you're both ok, though sad about the deer and the car.

I had an odd dream the other day that you had died. Thankfully it doesn't appear to be so.

Yeah, hopefully not anytime soon. Though spiritually, I have turned a corner and that represents a dying of an old self so maybe that's what you were seeing.

Ouch! I'm glad you are okay. Sorry to hear that the deer is obviously in a bad way. Cars can be fixed, people cant. Best of luck in getting this resolved!

It is resolved now. They reccommended a total loss. Now I'll have to buy it back from them and fix it or take the money and get a new car I guess.
