Help me choose my best work

In August of this year, I hope to be exhibiting my photos in a National juried art show in Monmouth, IL. Deadline for entries is June 6. I plan to enter 6 of my photos. I started with 150 of my best shots and have narrowed it down to 38 (Strange number I know but I couldn't decide from there). Please help me out by choosing the best 12 photos below. I'll then take those top 12 and post in a separate poll for the Top 6. Just click the radio button beside your favorite 12 and then hit Submit. Thanks for your help!

I like them all and you don't know how hard it was for me to choose. I remember the cowboy though! that was the picture I held in my lap wasn't it?

I believe it was. I had to take it out of it's frame to scan it.

Very hard to choose, some excellent photos in there. The ones I chose either grabbed me straight away, or always had me coming back to look at them again, or I was looking at them the longest when trying to make a choice. Great photos, Mark!

Thanks Dom. Hard for me to pare it down this far as you can imagine. I have no idea what the judges would be looking for but figured I'd give them a variety and maybe move ahead of people who might just give them a singular viewpoint.

Baldy cabin looks EXACTLY like the place we were walking in the dream i wrote to you about a couple years (?) back. where is that?

This view of Baldy was taken from the top of Palo Flechado Pass just above Eagle Nest, NM but as big as it is, you can see it from several vantage points.

Baldy itself may have been similar, but it's really the foreground and cabin I remember well.

That cabin has of course been there for a lot of years. But apparently I just took it for granted that it was there and for 25 years just looked right past it at the mountain. Then one day everything was wet and misty and I suddenly noticed it. And one day, I'll drive by and it will be gone. Kinda goes right along with what Laslo Moholy Nagy said about photography, "The subject will stand still only long enough for the photographer it has chosen.

I think it was last autumn you posted a really scary old house with vines going up the house and through the windows. I tried finding them on rural_ruin but came up blank.

The only thing I recall is commenting about the vines and you said when you took that one particular photo you remembered how I love old vines ... some shots from there might be good candidates. Just a suggestion.

Re: thi8s post ... please stick with #1 no matter what happens. The room is in total ruin and that old Baldwin? piano is still rather unscathed by time. It's an elegance which has outlasted the house. Most excellent photo.

I think the post you were thinking of was taken in Pike, Co, IL and that would have been last Spring. Number 1 will be going in I'd imagine. It has quite a few votes now.

Thanks W. I didn't go back as far as last spring but I'll do that.

Re: #1, why do people leave a falling down house and leave something decent like that old piano?

I've seen so many example like this I just don't understand.

Too hard to move and no one wants to fix it I'd imagine. We lost a player piano to a repairman who moved and never gave it back. We have no idea where it is now.

I found the post: http://community.livejournal.com/rural_ruin/741263.html#cutid1 in photos 16-19.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction :)

I certainly hope you win something at the photo contest.

QUESTION: Something that I've never seen anyone post is an old family cemetery on an old farm. There are several old family cemeteries like that around here which is interesting that this is largely a Catholic County with many Catholic cemeteries dating back to the 1850's. It's always easy to spot the home cemeteries, there will be a group of trees and tall grass grown up which no one mows.

Now for my question ... have you ever come upon such a family cemetery while exploring an old abandoned/falling down farm?

I know where several are in Schuyler County, the Taylor is right behind me, the Linn is up the road and the Herche is nearby. Also the Gapen. The houses are long gone but the cemeteries are still there. Mostly they are decently maintained. I could post some photos sometime if you like. There was a house I found in Scott County that had a family plot with a stone wall around it but the landowner still ived in anotehr house on the land so I didn't bother it.

If you do get a chance, please take photos of some of the old cemeteries. That would be great.

I'm off to bed so I'll say goodnigt.

I want prints of some of those... You got them for sale anywhere?

I know I don't have some of the newer ones up yet. Some I've never shown on LJ either. Most can be found for sale here:

http://beardancerstudios.imagekind.com/

I'll have the rest of these up on that site sometime this week. If the prices there seem to high, let me know and I'll have prints made and send them to you. I just put them up on that site because they will print and frame everything for me and I don't have to do anything.

I think you ought to do this in stages, since you've got so many. I had a really hard time choosing!

Maybe sift it down to anything with 5 or more votes, and try again?

It would appear I'm going to have to because 18 photos have more than 5. On a second note, 11 have 6 or more so if a couple more people vote, I may come out with a Top 12 anyway.

I Still have a top 11 at this point. Then I have about 8 photos that have gotten 5 votes. So I'll put those up in a mini poll to run off for the 12th spot. Then I'll put up the 12 and have people select the top 6 and those will be the ones I enter. The contest judges then can choose to put any number from 0-6 of them in the show. I hope I make the cut with at least one of them.

Hey dad, sorry I've been so very busy with lots of things that I missed this. I can't vote on it because...

1. voting's over
2. I can't pick...I LOVE all of them

I might buy one off of you to hang over my bed or in the living room. I just can't decide just yet. Hope you're having a lovely weekend. [hug}

I don't know how to count I guess, because I think I may have picked more than 6. It wasn't easy!! Not the counting part but the picking part. They're all very beautiful.
