Matias Avelar

My ex-grandfather-in-law passed away on this past Friday at the age of 79. He was half Mexican and half Indian. He made a lot of mistakes in his life that pretty much assured he'd always be looked down upon and kicked around. But he was also a survivor and fiercely dedicated to his family. He always treated me with respect and friendship and showed me how to make southwestern jewelry. He married a strong woman who had raised two strong boys after their father had been killed in a mining accident in Creede, CO. He never tried to replace their father or her husband. He just tried to be the best man and the best provider he knew how. I'll miss him.

Rest in peace Matt.

Mark

I was hoping to have seen him in June when I go to meet my guide in Tucumcari. He lived in Lubbock, TX.
