Nice relaxing weekend. We ddin't go down on Friday night like usual. I was tired. I got home late Friday and it was freaking cold so we stayed in the city and went down Saturday morning instead. We were ratehr pissed last week when we went to Cub foods and spent about $30 on two bags of groceries. I kept complaining that since the Mom and Pop groceries had been run out of business we would eventually have to go to Cub or Kroger or one of the otehr Mega chains for our groceries. Well the time finally came and we ran out of meat in the freezer so we went to Cub because it was closest. No more. We will now be buying our groceries for the week on Sunday at either Fiegls Foods (local Mom and Pop grocery in Rushville) or the Dot Foods warehouse where we can get wholesale groceries. We went to Fiegl's on Saturday and got five bags of food groceries plus toilet paper and cat litter for less than $30. Plus the pork chops we bought don't smell like the fetal pigs in high school biology like the Cub Foods pork chops did and you get more for your money. No lie, at Cub foods we got three paper thin pork chops for $3.03 and at Fiegl's we got 3 nice thick center cut pork chops for $1.61. Plus a beef roast for $2.75 and a whole chicken for $1.21. The basic concept of supply and demand doesn't seem to apply to grocery stores.

My neighbor at the next farm (1/2 mile away) runs a country butcher shop so I may see if I can get a good price on 1/2 a side of beef and put it in my chest freezer rather than buying meat from week to week. Then I can also be sure the meet is hormone free and not touched by genetic engineering as well. If I went back to being a hunter, I could just eat wild game all the time. I don't think I'm quite there yet though. People give me wild game all the time. I just had venison for dinner last Wednesday and when warm weather comes, I'll go back to eating fish that I catch for most of my meat. Good thing I love fish.

Saturday I took Jake out for a run alongside the tractor. Found out we really have some deep snow drifts back toward the woods. Despite the cancer, Jake has lost none of his energy. he ran right alongside the tractor even when I was going fast in 4th gear. In fact he was passing me several times and running back to show he could do it. Several time he put his nose into a drift and pushed his way through like a plow. There were deer and coyote tracks all over the fields and he had a good time trying to sniff them out. Afterward, with the tips of my ears adn nose frozen, I went back inside and just enjoyed a lazy afternoon of watching the Lord of the Rings exteneded DVD with Deb. We used the Foreman Roaster to make whole roast chicken with potatoes, carrots and onions for Saturday dinner.

Guess what we did Sunday? If you guessed that we watched the Superbowl, youd have guessed wrong. I pride myself on the fact I didn't watch a single pro-football game this season. In fact, until this morning I didn't know either who won the superbowl or who even played in the superbowl. How is that for out of touch?

No, instead, Deb and I went to see The Two Towers over in Jacksonville. It was my second time and her first. Now she can understand when everytime we are watching LOTR and she says "Wow they did a great job on the Orcs in this movie!" and I say "Just wait until you see the second movie!"

I have a question though for all you LOTR fans. Does Legolas have some kind of magic quiver though? You never see him put more arrows in but he always has arrows to shoot. Especially in the battle of Helm's Deep. He is doing this rapid fire thing and never runs out of arrows. That was another thing we noticed in the first movie and it's even more pronounced in the second movie.

When we got back to the farm Sunday, we made pork chops and twice baked potatoes and then gathered all our stuff and headed back to the city.

This morning I get an email from my Mom that she had to take my Dad to the Emergency room yesterday. He and I both suffer from this ailment where occasionally meat (though bread is bad for it too) will get caught midway down your esophagus. and when you try to swallow it further, your saliva (or if you try to drink water and force it down). causes the blockage to expand and make things worse. Apparently dad suffered with a blockage for about 12 hours until he asked Mom to take him to the hospital which is to say he must have really been suffering. Anyway, they had to anesthetize him and stick a scope down his throat and pull out little pieces a few at a time until the blockage was cleared. I've had this happen to me before to the point I really feared I would die I can truly empathize with him. People notice with me it takes me forever to eat a meal. It's because I'm trying to chew very slowly and not end up choking on anything. So Dad is going to go back and find out what the real medical cause is and see if anything can be done to alleviate the situation. I'm very interested to hear the outcome of this because as I get older, it's become enough of a problem that if there is a procedure to correct this, I'd be more than happy to do it.

In other news, through various channels, I was able to locate an old friend of mine from my early college years at Virginia Tech. I'd not heard from him since 1984 and it turns out he's on an Air Force Base in the UK. I'll write more later about the specific memories this friendship evokes but suffice to say, a big link to my past has come back to me.

Now back to Monday morning drudgery at work. I'm trying to locate video clips for an interactive CD Rom we are doing. Fun Fun.

I can answer that! No Legolas doesn't have a magic anything. Well other than the gift he recieved from Lorien that is, which is kinda magical. In the books it goes into detail about how he's always wandering around after battles looking for arrows. He runs out in the book at Helms Deep and has to kill orcs with his knife. That's when he and Gimli have their "who can kill more orcs" contest and in fact Gimli wins because Legolas runs out of arrows and has to fight with his knife.

The movie was ALOT different than the books, Legolas magic quiver being the LEAST of things. Primary among my bitches is Frodo and Sam going to Gondor, elves coming to the defense of Helms Deep, and the Ents at first refusing to fight. But that's a post for my own journal.

Re: Legolos?
I haven't read the books in years though I do have them all as Books on Tape but they are all 14 hours long on tape so I don't do a lot of listening to them. Thanks for that. That's only one of the inconsistencies I saw too. But hey, at least the movies are better than that old animated rag they had out from way back.

Re: Legolos?
Do you have Two Towers narrated by Rob Inglis? My dad's car radio got hungry one day and ate the only copy we have. This is why I'm copying those tapes.

Re: Legolos?
I'll have to look, I think we do. If not we will be buying it soon and I'll copy it for you.

Re: Legolos?
Cool. If you don't have ROTK or The Hobbit, I have those copied.

Re: Legolos?
I know we have the Hobbit and FOTR. Not sure about the otehr two. I got them all at a time when I was trading a lot of things with people and not sure if I ended up with the complete set or not.

Re: Legolos?
I got my dad FOTR for his birthday last year. Then he found the website and got the whole set. I never will convince him to get the Silmarillion though.
