Finally, some release

Well I was officially broke this weekend. Seriously, I'm hoping no checks bounce before we have a chance to get paychecks in the bank tomorrow. So I went to the farm to spend a weekend of being poor. I worked in the garden. Made homemade relish with friends, mowed the lawn.Ate all my meals from the garden which is probably pretty healthy anyway. Spent time talking to friends online. Had some amazing phone conversations with devilmiyu and kalistorm My vampie character in the Roleplay of the Vampire's game proposed to a lovely young thing named Redsgoddes and the proposal was accepted. One of my Childer, jadedone38 who sometimes comes over and uses my computer, proposed in-game to kalistorm and was accepted as well. So now we are all making wedding plans. Sort of like art mimicing life eh?

Sunday night, I had free tickets to see Tom Petty back here in Peoria so around 4 pm, I grab Robbie the Postman and we head out at breakneck speed back here. He was impressed I was doing 70 or better most of the way. Well with him running blocker for me in the rear and a nice long straight road, it was easy. We stopped at the Goose Pit bar and grill in Banner (Population 150) for a cold bottle of Busch to wash down some of the road dust and headed on. Parked his truck at my house and went down to the civic center. I was easily able to sneak in a digital camera in my boot and snapped a couple decent shots. We were really too far away for my crappy digital to be effective though as the beer bottle flies, we were only about 100 feet from the stage. Really goods seats actualy. Robbie was true to his normal form Nik, he did yell quite a few disturbing things but it was all good. I needed a release and I just didn't care, so I screamed right along with him. During Refugee and Free Fallin, he got out his harp and just wailed right along with the band. Everyone around us thought it was cool. Our own little concert within a concert. So here is my review of Petty.

Tom Petty rocked Peoria, IL last night. I can't say much for the opening act Mavis Staples. I suppose in her own genre she was OK, but I don't think it's what Petty fans came to hear.

Tom opened his show with American Girl and rocked for 2+ hours. I have to say it was an even better show than the one I saw at the same venue in 96. The light show was killer, the sound was excellent and Tom was on top of his game through the whole show. Denmont Tench absolutely wailed on the piano. Petty was in classic form on songs like Free Fallin and Running Down a Dream and my ears are still echoing with The Last DJ.

After a brief break the band came back with a 3 song encore including a smokin' version of Baby Please Don't Go.

Several times during the show the audience drowned out Petty's own voice which reminded me so much of the live version of Breakdown. It was classic! From the first song to the last, the audience was on it's feet and there was so much good ole butt shakin goin on. Lots of eye candy, reminded me of an 80's concert. Gotta love that.

I gotta say, I love that new song Melinda he has debuted on this tour. I hope when they finally record it, they leave in the long solos.

What surprised me most was the broad age range he seemed to attract. When I saw him in 96 it was folks my age and older that can remember listening to his earliest stuff when it first came out. I'm 38 now and last night, the age range was like 13-85 which is so cool that his music appeals to such a broad range. There is hope for the youth of America yet.

And I gotta say that in comparrison to other big name acts of his generation and their recent tours, his ticket prices were completely reasonable for $36 - $50 and right before TicketBastard closed out phone and net sales at 3 pm there were still front row seats available. My tickets were comps from a friendly DJ I know so I really can't complain at all but even if I'd had to pay, I would not have minded.

All in all, a fantastic way to spend a Sunday night. I'll always play to see Petty. I would have found a way to scrape the money together this time if Bones had not come throught with the free tickets. There ae some bands out there now that I like one or two songs from but I would not shell out for concert tickets. Everyh song Petty played last night was a classsic. I'll keep going to see him as long as he keeps touring.

Well you can’t turn him into a company man
You can’t turn him into a whore
And the boys upstairs just don’t understand anymore
Well the top brass don’t like him talking so much
And he won’t play what they say to play
And he don’t want to change what don’t need to change
And there goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey, hey, hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
There goes the last DJ
Well some folks say they’re gonna hang him so high
Because you just can’t do what he did
There’s some things you just can’t put in the minds of those kids
As we celebrate mediocrity all the boys upstairs want to see
How much you’ll pay for what you used to get for free
And there goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey, hey, hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
And there goes the last DJ

Well he got him a station down in Mexico
And sometimes it will kinda come in
And I’ll bust a move and remember how it was back then
There goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey, hey, hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
And there goes the last DJ

Re: i love tom petty!
He's still on tour and will head out your way again. I've seen tickets on ebay for a lot of shows so they are still out there. I'm thinking of going down to Nashville to see him too.
