Near Elizabethtown, NM

The dragon has been there since the 70's. No one ever seemed to know how or why it got there. I finally got the story from a cowboy friend in the area. In the early 70's, a travelling hippie came through looking for work. He claimed to be a sculptor. A local rancher told him he could have food and board if he would create something in his field that would make his ranch stand out form everyone else's. The dragon took him 3 weeks to build and then he just left sometime in the night. It actually seems to fit with it's suroundings, guarding the little ditch.

enjoy the weekend.

weird!

Did you just stumble upon this by chance, or did someone tell you about it?

I've been visiting the area for about 24 years now. It's been there as long as I can recall. I think people just take it for granted now though when I was there in August it looked like someone had repainted it so maybe someone still cares. It's always been a kind of landmark between Eagle Nest, NM and Red River, NM.

that's cool. I also liked the story behind it, of the wandering hippie

Oh wait, I misinterpreted what you meant. I was thinking you were saying an old hippie *was* a dinosaur. LOL. :)

Actually you are not too far off on that one. I don't think I've ever seen cows around it even though ther are cows in that field. Ever seen that monster?

I saw it this summer and someone had repainted it. Looked like they might have repaired it a bit too. Hey have you ever come across a guy in MO that makes animals and people out of things like propane tanks and such?

No; This does not sound familiar. Perhaps he should make some cows to keep the dragon company.

I think I found him somewhere between Louisiana, MO and Jefferson city one time. One of those little towns you would blink and miss it. But along the road were all these junk metal creations. I think there was even the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse made from old oil cans. I'll have to see if I can find the pics and post them.

I think you need to find a wandering hippie to build you one and scare away the 'possums.
