Northern Lights

I was out photographing cemeteries yesterday. Yup, spending all my time with the dead again. I revisited an old plot that houses several of my relatives from about 150 years ago or so. Anyway, last night at the farm I walked out and happened to look up and see the Northern Lights. I've seen them before in Colorado and Montana and there i could see more colors. These were like a diffused light blue cloud with shafts of brighter blue light shooting through. I took a roll of film so we will see what happens with that. You can only see them in the lower 48 on a handful of nights and only then if the conditions are just right. Last night was clear and cold out in the country. I drove into town about 10 pm watching them all the way but even the little bit of light pollution from town blocked them out. I could see them back at the farm until about midnight when I went to sleep. I'm in Central Illinois which is pretty far south for them. Anyone else see them last night?

I'd think you could see them pretty well from up there. But maybe you are too far east or perhaps city lights block them for you.

I saw them! I went out to my truck around 6pm for something, and had to do a double-take, since town is toward the north. I called all sorts of people, and they grumbled about living in town, but most of them saw something. Most of what I saw was greenish white bands that moved and shimmered really neat, and a band of red directly above me. Hee!
