Not my normal cup of meat but still...

Upon request from my Catholic mother, Deb and I made a Rosary for my aunt for Christmas. I've not even seen one let alone used one in about 20 years so considering that, I think it turned out pretty well. By the way, it's sterling silver and poppy jasper in case you wondered.

It is because the Rosary is divided into five decades. Each decade represents a mystery or event in the life of Jesus. There are four sets of "Mysteries of the Rosary" (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious). These four "Mysteries of the Rosary" therefore contain, a total of twenty mysteries. The Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries are then said on specific days of the week. During private recitation of the Rosary, each decade requires devout meditation on a specific mystery. Public recitation of the Rosary (two or more people), requires a leader to announce each of the mysteries before the decade, and start each prayer.

The Apostle's Creed is said on the Crucifix; the Our Father is said on each of the Large Beads; the Hail Mary is said on each of the Small Beads; the Glory Be after the three Hail Mary's at the beginning of the Rosary, and after each decade of Small Beads. In June 13, 1917, Our Lady asked that an additional prayer be added after each decade of the Rosary. It is a prayer of forgiveness to Jesus and is said following the Glory Be after each decade only.

In other words.... there's a lot of praying involved and a lot of meditation. I used to pray the rosary. I used to have one that was given to me by my dear grammie. That particular rosary is now buried with her, by my request. It was handcrafted, very beautiful like this one. It had different types of beads, the majority of it were amethysts used for the sets of 10, the first 3 beads were made of lapis lazuli, the ending beads were made out of bloodstone. All linked together with silver. That rosary meant a lot to me. It had also provided me some kind of "energy" (for lack of a better word) whenever I had it in my hands. But I wanted it resting with my grandmother. No sense getting it back now even if I wanted to. But I'm glad it's safe with her.

(sorry this was a long reply but I hoped that answered your question)

Thanks. I hope you didn't mind but I learned a lot from reading your explanation as well. I have a strong interest in belief systems.

I don't mind at all. I was born and raised catholic but at the moment, I'm not practicing that religion. I'm out there learning about different types of religion, beliefs and philosophies.

They all have the same common and basic teaching, don't they.. compassion and love. A lot of people forget that...

I hope that your connection with your grandmother is and continues to be as beautiful, contemplative and miraculous as your words lead me to believe. This sort of interaction between the generations is, I think, what truly makes for the the Divine within the human condition. Thank you, very very much, for this glimpse into your world.

My grandmother raised me but she passed away last year. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about her, or something reminds me of her. There are times I'd be stuck in a dilemma and I'd close my eyes and think about her and wonder what would she say to help me out and I just go with it.

You're very welcome.

Heh, of course the little devil would know. After all, devils are only misunderstood angels or fallen ones. *shrug*

I'm neither, you know that. *grins* Have a nice weekend.
