What a week for a birthday

The shit I've been through this week is why I usually take my birthday as a vacation day. It's becoming more and more obvious I need a vacation. And I'm getting a 10 day vacation in 8 days. I think I can hold out. I think I can I think I can.

Beginning of the week I was working on 3 CD-ROM projects and 2 textbook projects. I've whittled it down to the 2 textbooks now but damn. I didn't know which way was up for most of the week. Hence not many posts in LJ. In fact I'm lucky I can get to LJ at all since my company opted to block certain websites unless we have a "legitimate" reason to access them. I've had a couple of places I usually surf to come up blocked. I had to cook for 30 people last night. I managed it for under $30 and it was an awesome meal. I made Frogmore stew.

* 3 tablespoons commercially prepared shrimp boil such as Old Bay Seasoning plus 3 tablespoons salt or 3 tablespoons homemade boil
* 3 pounds small red potatoes
* 1 1/2 gallons water
* 1 can beer
* 2 pounds hot smoked link sausage or Polish Sausage, cut into 2-inch pieces
* 12 ears freshly shucked corn, broken into 3- to 4-inch pieces
* 4 pounds shrimp

In a large stockpot, add the seasonings to the water and bring to a boil. Add potatoes and boil 20 minutes Add the beer. Add the sausage and boil, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Add the corn and count 5 minutes. Add the shrimp and count 3 minutes. (Don't wait for the liquid to return to a boil before timing the corn and shrimp.) Drain immediately and serve.

It was even more delicious today when I served the leftovers to my office. Plus I made cornbread and a pineapple upsidedown cake to go with it.

Last week I spent a day in the hospital. No I wasn't sick. I was posing as a patient recovering form surgery for a photo shoot for a book I'm working on. Why do we use employees as models? They don't whine and we don't have to pay them model fees. Someone's husband got to play the AIDS patient instead of me. I have to admit, he looked like he was near death anyway, so he was probably a better choice than me.

Did I mind having a couple of nurses push and prod me in a bed all day? Not really no.

I went to make a car rental reservation for my trip to Seattle a little bit ago. Christ on a Pogo Stick (my new favorite expression) it was going to be expensive. I'm a Hertz #1 Gold Club member and I usually get very good rates from them but for what they wanted for a 10 day rental, I could have rented a car from here and driven to Seattle and back and even with gas would have been less. They wanted close to $700. So I said Fuck You to Hertz and got on Travelocity and got a car through Alamo for less than half what Hertz wanted. And you know it would have been the exact same car type. Screw that, I'm all about cheap travel.

We found outtoday we are getting our yearly bonuses a month early. So essentially my whole Seattle trip will be funded by my bonus. Will you hear me complain about that? Nope, not at all.

My uncle who was in the hospital dying two weeks ago is back there today again. He had improved enough to come home but he started spitting up blood last night. So he's back in ICU. If I had one wish for everyone I know that would come true it would be for everyone who smokes to stop smoking now. It's not as if the eventaul outcome is uncertain.

Shrimp Berl!
That looks yummy.

It looks like you were about to get an enema, or at least have your temperature taken :-p

It is so stressful when family members are in that limbo place, no matter what the origin of the problem is. *hugs*

Re: Shrimp Berl!
She was placing pillows undr me and getting ready to roll me over. But I was laughing in most of the shots because she kept tickling me when she was stuffing the pillows under me.

Dirty Birdie,

There was thi mannekin under the next bed. It was the top half of a female and bottom half of a male and both anatomically correct. She was pointing out things and joking the whole time. Very hard to keep a straight face.

What's wrong with shrimp? I love shrimp. The uncle is back home again. No one really knows what's going to happen at this point. The blood was caused by a tear in his esophagus.

Shrip is just...shrip. Icky...don't like seafood at all really, except for the occasional tuna salad sandwich.

I'm glad your uncle is doing better.

There is one more pic with two nurses and it looks like they are very interested in something around my midsection but it also makes me look pretty fat so no posting that one. The unlce is back home. Everyone is playingthe waiting game to see if he's goinf to improve or not.

If you didn't say "Hello Nurse!" during that photoshoot, there is something wrong with the fabric of the universe.

There were many many innuendos going on during that shoot.

I'm so sorry about your uncle and I know exactly of what you speak. It isn't easy. I'm sending lots of good thoughts your way for that.

I couldn't help but laugh uncontrollably at the pictures here though. You are quite ticklish. You look like you are about to burst out laughing.
