Crap Weekend

I actually had a good weekend and took lots of cool pix which I was going to post today. But Deb's bad weekend overshadowed my good weekend so I just don't feel like posting happy pix now. Oh and before we get to Deb's bad weekend, why in blue blazes does my ex-mother-in-law feel the need to send me pictures of my ex-wife? I mean I know they were trying to take a 4 generation picture and I'm actually very friendly with 3 of those generations but you'd think that maybe in the back of her mind she'd recall that her daughter and I went through a highly nasty divorce several years ago and maybe not just send the pic to me out of the blue. Maybe send me a note and ask if I wanted to see it even though Shelly is in the picture. Oh well. Life goes on I guess.

Since deb started managing the Discount Smoke Shop, tensions have been high between her and one of her employees who happens to be 18 and thinks she knows more than anyone else. To quote her, "At 18, I've been through more stuff than most people have by the time they are 30!" At first i thought maybe it was a clash of personalities but the more I heard from others, it seems like this little one just thinks she's entitled to more than anyone else is. Deb had a problem with the way she dressed so she asked her nicely to dress a little bit more businesslike. Yes I know it's a discount tobacco store but it is in a nice shopping center district. So anyway, the kid bitched and moaned that Deb was unfairly punishing her by "making" her wear jeans and a t-shirt rather than very short ratty shorts with a hole in the ass and an overly tight halter top. Then she refused to show up on thime and would change her schedule whenever she felt like it with no notice to Deb or any of the other managers. So Deb has had to ask her several times to change her behaivior a bit.

Saturday she was to work until 2. Deb was to come in at 11. When Deb came in early, the kid says she has to leave by 11 because of some part she is playing in her sister's wedding (which apparently lasted from Friday to Sunday). Deb told her she was on until 2pm and the Kid says she checked with anotehr manager and it was Ok for her to go. So she just walks out. Deb noticed that she signed her timesheet as having left at 2 pm anyway. So Deb changes it back to 11 and faxes it to the head office then calls the other manager to ask if the time off had been approved. It hadn't. It had never been mentioned. At 2pm the Kid walks back in and starts to go behind the counter. deb asks what she thinks she's doing and the Kid informs her she is going to fax something for personal use having to do with the wedding. Deb says no and the Kid proceeds to throw a fit about how she has always done it before (when there was no permanent manager at that store). Deb tells her that she is now required to send a fax activity report to the head office at the end of the day and they check all the numbers to make sure they are related to business at the store. The Kid says she never did that and Deb says that's because she wasn't following proper procedures. Deb reminds her that employees are not to be in the store when they are not on the clock unless they are buying something. Deb asks her if she wants to buy anything and the Kid says no so Deb asks her to kindly leave. She did so in a huff. (Note all this is recorded on the store security cameras). No further incident that day. Debv closes at 6 and goes home.

Sunday morning deb goes to open the store and when she goes in and presses her code into the alarm, the alarm sounds and will not shut off despite repeated attempts to input the correct code. Finally the police show up and shut it off. An alarm specialist comes out from the security company and informs Deb that the alarm was tampered with sometime during the night. Deb notices lights on in the humidor and the back office that were shut off when she left. Deb calls her area manager and asks him to check the security camera tapes which are kept at a remote office. At 2 am, the Kid went into the store, reset the alarm, went into the humidor and removed a box of cigars, went in the back employee area and did something unseen and then left. So the area manager says he will be up Monday morning, call the Kid in and take action.

About noon, the Kid calls Deb and tells her she will not be able to work Tuesday which she knows is Deb's day off so she can attend an awards ceremony for me. The thing is,the Kid knows that the store manager does not have the power to approve schedule changes. that requires filling out paperwork with the area office. So Deb tells her in no uncertain terms, she will be working on Tuesday. Kid says no, Deb says yes. Kid starts to cry and hangs up. 30 minutes later, Deb is talking to me on the phone when she says that Kid has pulled up out front and she will call me back. What happendd then, I found out much later. Kid comes in and starts arguing with Deb about the time off. (Note kid has already taken off the better part of 3 days for her sister's wedding and now wants more time off to visit with new in-laws). Deb says nothing about the thievery of the night before and simply tells Kid no and that she will have to discuss it with the area manager. Now Kid gets really upset and tells Deb, "This was my store before you came along. I applied for that manager position. It should have been mine godamnit. It used to be I could do anything I wanted in here. Now you just want me to be a piece of shit and do what you say I have to do. you think your the shit don't you? Well you aint all that!"

Deb stands there calmly and asks Kid to leave the store. So Kid hauls off and slaps Deb across the face...right in front of the security camera. Deb stands there and tellsthe kid to get the hell out of the store before she calls the cops. Kid leaves. Deb locks up the store and calls the area manager and tells him what happened. he goes to the remote office and checks the tape and confirms the whole thing is on there. he tells her to go ahead and close up and go home. This morning I called in sick (which was not really much of a lie since I'd felt kida puny on and off all weekend). I needed to be here fore Roto Rooter to come snake our basement drain. Deb comes home unexpectedly. Apparetnly Kid was called in to speak to Area Manager. Deb went back at 1pm. I don't yet know what is going on. But Deb reminded Area Manager to remind Kid that it would be within her right to press charges and I'm sure they realize she could also take legal action against the company so I'm sure penalties will be severe for Kid.

I told her had I been in her shoes, I'd have smiled when Kid slapped me and said, "Thank you for giving me power over you."

So now I wait to hear the verdict.

They should get her for everything, for stealing, for assault, for all of it. Vandalism... take that kid's last six months of paychecks, that's what I say.

The store has only been open for 7 weeks but yeah, I agree. People have to know there are consequences to actions.

What a little beast. It seems that it should be a foregone conclusion that the kid will be fired. Store managers should really have more power than it seems this chain gives them.

Deb was technically still in her training period so they had not granted her all the managerial priveledges yet. And it's a new company in this industry so they are still trying to figure out how to run themselves effectively. But yeah, I agree with you. I'd have told her she was fired even if I didn't have the authority.

Kudos to Deb for being so calm and professional in all of that. Especially that slap in the face. Here's hoping for justice!

If nothing else she gets to find out how your past can follow you for awhile.

Keep us updated, I really like to hear customer service stories like these. Deb played it beautifully, congratulations to her for being calm, professional and above pettiness.

If it were me, I'd certainly feel like I wanted to press charges... whether I would or not depended on how the kid reacted to the punishment from the store, and also the likliness of further harassment of Deb should the matter be persued. I hope everything works out in her favour.

Deb really wants to avoid the punitive avenues as it gets to be a lot of hassle. But she does expect an appology and no further contact.

Deb is definately made of stern stuff. She might get a better position out of this for her calmness and professionalism. I had a sort of rock of gibraltor mentality, no-thing bothers me...no-thng bothers me...no-thing bothers me...Armegeddon. Perhaps this child needs a little jail time to see she is not the center of this joint reality?

At the very least what she will get is an endless stream of rejection from all the future jobs she will apply for that rely on a past employer's reccomendation.

At 18, I've been through more stuff than most people have by the time they are 30!

I know a lot of people that could apply to and they aren't asses about it. That kind of experience tends to mature one. Now if by "more stuff" the kid meant material objects....

Enjoy never finding work again, Kid!

Beat the kid. Then beat the kids parents in front of the kid. Remember you got a shovel and a lot of land behind your house man.

Yeah if I'd been there it would have been handled quite differently but kudos to Deb for staying calm under fire.

It was not a pretty story, but nonetheless very entertaining to read. I like how kid was referred to without a name ~ she doesn't deserve such a title. Yes, I'm anxious for the verdict as well.

I could have named her I suppose but since this still may come down to legal action on Deb's part, I decided not to. Deb had to inventory the humidor today which is not a usual thing to do. she discoverd some notable shortages. So my feeling is the company is collecting all the info they can and talking to their lawyers to figure out how much legal action they are going to take. Kid has not worked since the incident with Deb on Sunday and originally she was scheduled to work today. So something is up. Tomorrow, an employees from another store nearby is coming in to take some of Kid's hours.
