The weekend and the week

I went down to the farm Friday evening very late. Basically I had the whole road to myself for 60 miles or more. An opossum tried to wander out in front of me but I stopped soon enough and he decided to retreat. Then I encountered a sizable herd of deer standing in the road. 20 of them or so. Someone is trying to tell me something. Saturday was spent cooking for my dad's 50th high school reunion committee meeting. Then somehow I got volunteered to do the desserts for the actual reunion in September. That will be the weekend before I head to NC for Jenn and rob's wedding. Speaking of Jenn. I was going to Madison, WI this weekend to see her as she is ordained but that got messed up by a trip to Chicago. So I won't be going up on Sunday after all. Sorry Lisa. I'll plan a trip for the near future to see you. Speaking of Chicago. I'll be at the Adobe Creative Suite Conference for the next 3 days. I'm going up by train tomorrow and I'll be staying at the Embassy Suites Lakeside if anyone should need me, though I can't imagine anyone really needing me. Don't know if I'll have access to email or not. Depends on if I take Deb's laptop or not I guess.

Speaking of Deb, the situation with the kid/thief/assaulter is now rectified. The store was not making much money and I think they feared the liability issues involved with all of this so they decided to close the store. Deb still has a job so I guess you could say she won but it may mean driving across the river each day and no longer having the manager status. So I think she will be looking for work again. Sigh.

Sunday, the folks left for home early. I was glad to have them around and glad that their leaving means I could relax for awhile. I was left with a sense of melancholy though. I'm not really sure why. Mid morning, I went out to my car for something and I was talking out loud to Spirit. Sometimes Spirit answers right away. Sunday was one of those days. I said, "Thanks for everything but a little warmth might be nice (it had been abnormally cool and damp for days)." Just then the clouds part and the sun comes out and warms my back. I smiled and said, "Thanks for that. I don't want to push it but the farmers around here would sure be appreciative if you let these rain clouds open up and pour some!"

I went out to finish digging the holes to plant all the new trees. I just had 8 more trees to plant out of 31. I got those holes dug plus one more for a new grapevine I'd bought. Got the trees in the ground and I was watering everything when the sky opened up. A light drizzle at first. I wanted to go over to Brown County and photograph a one room school I'd seen on a recent trip down to Missouri. As I drove that direction, a really steady and hard rain started. I thanked Spirit again. When I got to the school, i asked for one more thing, "Please Spirit, protect me from falling through the floor in this place!" Spirit did indeed keep me from falling through the floor. And just look whatI found inside.

I thought it was an old teddy bear or something when I first saw it. Guess someone's kitty didn't come home one day. While I was inside, concentrating on not falling through the floor while I got pix of a hundred year old grand piano, a local resident came up just outside and spoke to me which scared the bejeezers out of me and almost sent me through the floor anyway. Turns out she had been a student at the school in 1952. The school was closed in 1954. We had a good chat. Unfortunately, the rain started again and the tall grass outside was so wet that my shoes were soaked to the point of water squishing up between my toes as I walked and my jeans were soaked up to my knees. I did manage to get a nice self portrait though, despite being cold and wet.

But the drive home with wet feet was none too pleasant. So I rewarded myself with hot tea and cherry cheesecake. Work has been intense and stupid the past two days. I'm trying to get specs out to a freelance artist so he can be working while I'm gone. Our internet connection has been abysmally slow. Even slower than dialup and we can't get any word from Corporate on the status except that they are working on it. We just love being the red headed stepchild of the division. Oh well. Packing tonight and leaving on Amtrak in the morning.

Peace,

Wander

Why thank you dear. I love rainy days for shooting things like this because the humidity helps to make the colors more saturated.

AAAH! KITTY! WARN A BITCH!

That school looks really cool. If you're ever down Rowan County way, see if you can get some pictures of Spencer School. It's an original wood one-room schoolhouse that they found out behind my old elementary school. They moved it up to Horizons Unlimited up in Salisbury and the fourth grade classes in the county go up there and have school in there one day out of the year. I wore a sunbonnet there.

Just a sunbonet and nothing else? what kind of school is that anyway?

hehehe

I'll check it out. I thought the cat was a stuffed animal at first until I saw the teeth.

Yeah, I'd imagine it was probably a "wild" cat. The kind that stop by your farm for a day or two and then are gone. I couldn't see any bullet holes so I'd imagine it got in a fight with another animal and then crawled in there to die.

I admire your spirituality--I kind of miss having a guide, God, angels, etc.

On a completely different note, I always imagined you as a redhead!

Yeah unfortunately I can't escape the redhead thing. No tan and all that. I'd imagien you still have a guide. They don't usually leave you for good.
