This is like hearing that millions of mosquitos suddenly died in mid air:

These suckers jump out of the water and kill people.

Kill people?

Yeah they were brought in by fish farmers in Arkansas in the 80's to help keep thier holding ponds clean but during a flood they escaped into the rivers and migrated up the Mississippi. There is a huge population in the Illinois River drainage and they have feared them getting into Lake Michigan. They eat so much that it leaves no food for native species of fish and they also consume the eggs of the native fish. The worst part though is that they can get as big as 50 pounds and when they hear an outboard motor, they jump out of the water. Sometimes they just land in the boat abut they have been known to jump up and hit people, knocking them out of boats or killing them. How would you like to be travelling along in your boat at 35 mph or so and a 50 pound fish suddenly jumps up and hits you in the head?

I never knew they were a problem. I have always enjoyed their presence in Japanese gardens and ponds.

Yeah they are peaceful enough but like any other critter, when allowed to get into the wrong environment with no natural enemies, they can cause problems. They are edging out lots of native species in the Illinois river.

They used to shock the lake over at Carthage when I was a kid to weed out the carp because they would edge out every other fish. Thousands of carp floating up to the top. That smelled horrible. I can only imagine what ti would smell like on the river.

They can weigh around 50 pounds and their natural reaction to hearing an outboard motor is to jump out of the water. Several recreational boaters, jet skiers and commercial fisherman have been injured or killed when speeding along on the water and a 50 pound fish jumps up and hits them in the chest or head.

Freaky no? And you thought LA freeways were dangerous. The things us rednecks have to put up with. Sheesh.

HA! I can see that happening.

I got hit in the head by a vulture in Belize while traveling in the back of a pick up truck.

That was the freakiest thing ever, so yeah.

WILD life real.

I think I just came up with a companion comic to the Porcupine Incident. >:D

I saw a show on those carp once. It was funny at first to watch the huge fish jumping into the boats. It's always funny until someone gets hurt.
We have a serious snakehead fish problem. Though they don't kill people, they kill everything else in their path and then turn amphibious and walk to another body of water so they can kill everything there.

Sounds like the theme for a bad horror movie doesn't it?

Put the carp and the snakeheads together and it could be
"The Fish"
just doesn't have the impact of
"The Birds"
