I spent most of the evening in the emergency room after an ill fated swallow of a piece of pork chop. Yep, got stuck in my esophagus again. Bad part is I've already had one esophageal dilitation a couple years back. They worked on me quite awhile. Put an IV in (male nurse Scott got it right onthe first try in the arm) and gave me first 1 miligram of glucosa-something a smooth muscle relaxant. Waited 20 minutes and tried to get me to drink water. Wouldn't get past the blockage and I threw it back up. So they gave me a double dose of the same stuff in the IV and waited again. After about 20 minutes of intense discomfort and feeling like I was having a heart attack, I felt the food pass on down. My stomach responded with a very satisfying burp. When the doc came back in I demonstrated my prowess at water drinking for him and he pronounced me cured. Thanksfully the gastrointerologist did not have to be called and I didn't have to be scoped but it was sort of touch and go there for a bit. So then while I was waiting for the doc to write me a scrip for Prevacid and give me a referal to the gastro dude, I amused myself and the nurse by making my vital signs rise and fall. Actually I don't think he was amused when I got my temp down to 95 but he did think it was cool that I got my heart rate down to 60 bpm from 84 where it was when I was under stress. I told him with a little more time I could go much lower than that but he didn't want me to freak out the doc too much so I let it get back up to around 72 bpm. So guess who gets to have another procedure done soon? well at least I have better insurance this time around.

I remember taking stress tests as part of a physical, and my 2 minute after the stress heartbeat would be lower than my starting pulse. Sometimes I'd ahve to take it twice with the same results. My doctor would cluck at me about my high blood-pressure (well, after waiting an hour in the doctors office, what's an empath to do?), he'd re-take it and drop 30 points, scratch his head and take it again....you get the idea.

Now sometimes I just swallow saliva and it goes down the wrong pipe and I have horrendous coughing fits. Just a bit of spit and it's like I was drowning, it's too much if I'm driving even.

Maybe you didn't give proper thnks to the pig? ;)

Perhaps that is the key. although to date it's been chicken, hamburger, bbq beef and pork that has gotten stuck. So I think I'm due to have my esophagus stretched again. What a joyful procedure that is. At least I'll be asleep for it.

Fine today if not a little more careful about chewing my food.

Your esophagus stretched? That sounds relly uncomfortable. But, probably not much more uncomfortable than a piece of food stuck in your throat.
If they do it, hope it solves the problem.

I went to the doctor a few weeks ago and had a higher than usual blood pressure. I told the nurse if they wouldn't take my weight first, perhaps my blood pressure wouldn't be so high! I went to another doctor last week and had them do my blood pressure first and, of course, it was normal. Then the nurse forgtot to weigh me as I had messed up her usual routine.
Ha! I think I'll do that every time!

I've had the procedure done once before, 3 years ago. It's called an esophageal dilitation. Basically they give you some good drugs and shove a tube down your throat that then expands and breaks up and scar tissue, returning your esophagus to it's correct diameter. He told me when he did it last time it didn't always take in everyone. I'm so happy about being among the 50% it doesn't work in the first time around.
