Dec. 20th, 2006

An hour ago, McGraw-Hill Higher Education called back. They went up $2,000 on their offer and I accepted it. An even $50K. That's $22K more than I was making 8 years ago when I first started with Glencoe/McGraw-Hill so not too shabby at all. In addition, the offer includes a $6,700 relocation package. Doesn't sound like a lot but when you consider I'm only relocating about 150 miles it's pretty good. That would pay moving expenses plus a couple months rent on a new place and a month or so on the old one while we are in transition.

And because I worked most of 2006 for McGraw-Hill, I qualify for a 4.5% merit increase in 2007 and a 4% incentive bonus in April. So with all of that, I'll easily be making $11,000 more than I was making last year. Plus I got what amounts to a 2 month paid vacation with benefits.

I start January 16 at the office in Burr Ridge, IL. My position will be Media Projects Manager.

This is such a wonderful Christmas present I can't even express how happy I am!

Thanks to all my LJ friends for all your prayers, energy and encouragement!

Yippie!!!!

Congratulations!

What about your farm? I hope you won't have to sell it.

It's actually not mine to sell. My dad owns it but I'll be able to leave a vehicle in Macomb and take the train from Joliet to Macomb whenever I want. From there it's 27 miles to the farm so nothing will change really. Just take longer to get there.

Thanks!

Hey there, thanks bunches. I hope you and the kids and Orion have a wonderful Yule. I won't be living far from where they hold the Celtic retailers thing in Downer's Grove so next time you come up you have someone to drive you from the airport.

Congratumalations. I'm very glad to hear this.

By the way, you might be amused to learn that Deva (who you might recall was one of the first women in Philmont's ranch department) has joined the Army. As a firefighter. She ships out for basic on 24 January.

Why thank you! So what possessed her to join the Army in the midst of a war? I'm sure you will miss her. I wish her much luck. I've wanted for a long time to renew my forest fire fighter training and come out west to fight some of those fires. Unfortunately, Illinois does not offer the courses and the ones that are offered take longer than I have vacation for.

So what possessed her to join the Army in the midst of a war?

She felt she'd be less likely to kill someone, than if she stayed at her current job. ;) ...I think mostly she just wanted to do something she felt was both challenging and meaningful.

...A couple years ago, I'd considered trying to get onto a Hotshot crew, with an eye toward getting into the Smoke Jumpers. Decided I didn't want to be on-call 24/7/365 though. But it still sounds like fun.

Yes it does. I really enjoyed the training and the couple of fires I fought down south while I was on the Firefighting team at Virginia Tech.

She wants nothing more than to get out of the place we live now. We still like it here but the reasons for leaving have been outweighing the reasons for staying for a couple years now.

That's the company Job search site. You can even put in a profile and it will email you with openings that fit. If you pull up all the openings and then hit the Location link to sort by location and then keep hitting the forward buttons eventually it will get to US-IL-Chicago and US-IL-Burr Ridge. I know they are opening up about 50 positions this month and next.

You can say I refered you
