Time once again to blow things up

Incidentally, the reason I've not been posting much lately is this job is pretty much kicking my ass. Not that its that hard. Its not. A trained moneky could do my job. Well maybe not the developing websites part but the rest of it for sure. Its just a very time consuming job. You come in at 9 and the next thing you know it's 7 pm and you are still here. And then you stay a couple more hours getting things down to the Quality Assurance department. But the summer looks to be a little more free of work so that will be good.

Saturday morning I made the long and arduous drive to Burlington, Iowa to pick out my fireworks for the NC show next week. The drive is not so bad except I had to be there at 10 am. so I had to leave Joliet at 6:30 am. This after staying up until 4 am doing my taxes. Ouch! The taxes are not that hard since I have Turbo Tax to do all the figuring but the schedule C's can be a littel tricky. I got $46 from Federal and owed the State of Illinois $51. well I almsot broke even. Why do you ask do I get back so little a refund? Because I'm one of those strange people who likes having all his money to spend when he earns it, not a year later. So I put down an extra exemption/deduction (whatever thingy)on my W4. Good thing I have the two businesses to help make up the difference or I'd actually owe Federal about $200 each year.

So anyway, yeah, two hours of sleep later and I'm on the road. I actually got to the plant around 10:30. But Jim was Ok with my being late. We made short work of the paperwork and went out to the 1.4 building to pick out the stuff for the show. Now there is a tendency when picking out fireworks to go for creative names and fancy packaging. I've learned over the years though that some of the biggest surprises in life come from the most boring outer wrappings. This is true with people as well as fireworks. But when I saw the box that said "DR PYRO'S CHAOS KIT!" the little kid with a book of matches in me did a backflip of joy and I just had to have it. I don't give a damn what it does. It could be a case full of magic snakes but I was destined to have that box. So we'll see how it does in the show. I ended up getting $3200 worth of fireworks for about $1900. It pays to be a certified shooter and doing a show for the Boy Scouts. So that accomplished, I made my way down to the farm. The plant was out of t-shirts but fear not those who paln to assist me. I called Gwen who is making t-shirts in addition to her sign shop and ordered 15 t-shirts with a bit more specific design than the ones the plant puts out. These are a little more like concert t-shirts.

I'm also working on the soundtrack for the show. Right now only two things are for sure. We will start out with the National Anthem (and everyone better stand and put their hand on their heart or so help me...) and a 4x6 pyrotechnic flag that will go off at "rockets red glare." Then a few seconds later, the main show will start with The Cars, "Hello Again" that will be accompanied by the lighting of huge pyro signs that say HELLO AGAIN. The rest of the soundtrack is being developed and mixed tonight. I started out with well over 100 song ideas and have gone down to about half that. The list will get pared down again to about 20 songs which will be cut and slashed and faded to a 25 minute continuous play soundtrack. So far I have the following to work with:

Cloud Rooms - 310 - my brother's band and I've always wanted to use one of their songs. It's one of the few with vocals.

Back In Black - AC/DC - all these AC/DC songs are still in the running, though it will come down to which is least offensive. I do have to watch out with an audinece of Boy Scouts after all. And I used the ultimate fireworks song, Thunderstruck, 2 years ago at this show.

It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'N' Roll … AC/DC

T.N.T. - AC/DC

If You Want Blood (You've Got It) - AC/DC

You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC

Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith - Always wanted to use that.

Rock N Roll Party in the Streets - Axe - hadn't heard that one in a long time have you?

Train, Train - Blackfoot - it is the South after all.

Green River - Creeedence Clearwater Revival

Photograph - Def Leppard - already used Rock of Ages.

Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris

Do Ya - Electric Light Orchestra

Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting - Elton John

Save Me from the Dark - Evanescence

Sweet Child o' Mine - Guns N' Roses

Black on Black 2 - Heart

All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix

Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix

Fire - Jimi Hendrix

I Love Rock 'N Roll - Joan Jett

You've Got Another Thing Comin' - Judas Priest

Call Me the Breeze - Lynard Skynard - Used Sweet Home Alabama a couple years ago as well.

Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne

You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon - Just love the sax part.

Metal Health - Quiet Riot

America The Beautiful - Ray Charles - Probably during a slow part right before the finale.

Send Me an Angel '89 - Real Life

Dani California - Red Hot Chili Peppers

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones

Evil Ways - Santana

Rock You Like a Hurricane - Scorpions

Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) - Styx

20th Century Boy - T. Rex

Pain (Main Version) - Three Days Grace

Fall Down - Toad the Wet Sprocket

Who Are You - The Who

So that's the work for tonight and getting the goody box all straightened out.

I found a few grey morel mushrooms over the weekend so this weekend should be the high point of the season. eitehr that or it will happen while I'm gone to NC next week.

Peace,

Wander

I hope it is. We are shipping the show this year rather than bringing it ourselves and that has be a little nervous since I can't control my supplies like I always do. But it should be allright. Yeah, on the mushrooms. Our season is really late this year for the same reason. Did your grapes survive the cold snap? All the growers in Illinois and Missouri lost theirs.

It looks like the buds for this year are mostly alright. A few died. but that happens every year with frost. I beleive some areas of higher elevation got hit pretty hard. The Charlottesville area won't get a big crop this year.
I heard about the grapes up there. Peaches were hit hard also.
Good thing I have a nice stash of wine now!

I generally prefer to have no refund either. However, I can't say I'm unhappy about thinking I was gonna owe and finding out I have enough for a new rifle plus a little extra for wedding dress shopping. ;)

I have got to go morel hunting this year. There is no excuse for having lived here three years now and NOT gone morel hunting.

I think the biggest reason I don't put the right number of exemptions on my W4 is that the company I work for has a sales based incentive bonus they give us each year which is about the amount I would have gotten back from taxes had I put the right number of exemptions. I like having more money in my paycheck each month.

I'm frankly amazed at how many states have morels as elusive as they are.

So help me, you better use Fall Down. That is one of the best TTWS songs in the history of TTWS.

Also, have you used Def Leppard's "Animal"? That would be a great fireworks song with the chorus and all. I don't know if it would be appropriate for Boy Scouts, though.

Want me to check on your fireworks since they'll be dangerously close to me and all? I promise I won't "test" any.

I got 3 songs mixed last night and yes I will be using Fall Down. We'll see about animal, my all time fav DL song. My dad will be picking up the fireworks so no, we don't need you to help us on this one. You can sleep with them in the storage facility at the camp if you want. Deb says hello.
