So how did the fireworks go?

Well, they went. Because we had too many shows to do in 2 days, the teams were divided and pretty lean. This led to some interesting challenges. Gwen got hit by a "magic bullet" as one of the Thunder King cakes broke apart and threw shit all over the place. Funny thing was it missed 4 other people who were standing in front of her. She got hit in the upper thigh and it left a nasty bruise. I think we all got a little singed from fallout but we had one of our best finales.

The long pause in the middle is where the sponsors were playing the National Anthem and lighting an American Flag ground effect. You can hear me say "Fuck" during the cakes because of the amount of fallout that was coming down. The show in Astoria, about 15 miles away was going on at the same time and we could hear the report of the salutes occasionally. That was the second half of our team it it apparently went off without a hitch.

Saturday night we were at Mt. Sterling Lake on the levee and the second half of the team was at Vermont. Ten minutes into the Vermont show, an unscheduled freight train pulled into a nearby siding and the show was put on hold for 2 hours while they tried to get the train (loaded with coal) to move. The show at Mt/ Sterling was very lean on crew. Deb got sick an had to sit out. Gwen was on the injured list from the night before so we had 7 people doing a show we normally had 12 people doing. Rob and I set up very early in the morning to avoid a lot of hassle later on which was good. We were training two people. Tanya who has been with us several years wanted to shoot part of the show. She did 3 passes, I did the last 8 and Rob lit the finale. A new guy, Tim who is a fireman in Astoria was being trained to load. When I went to video the finale, I accidentally grabbed the camera by the battery compartment and popped the batteries out. Too bad, it was a great finale. Actually all the finales went off without a hitch.

In these two clips, Tanya is shooting the show. But I also got some good footage of Tim and Lynette loading and you can hear the directions we give each other. My Nomex hood has some singe marks on it and my shooter shirt is now burnt in more places than it was before. It was a nasty night for fallout because we had to shoot into the wind to avoid dropping shells into the crowd.

There was also a bunch of human drama going on since Rob and Gwen are in the midst of a divorce. But no one got really hurt except for some bruised egos and hurt feelings. All in all, it was a good weekend for fireworks.

Peace,

Wander
