Simple Math

Don't gasp too loudly but after seven years,

And yes, it's being donated. Why? I just needed a change. I'll probably let it go back to the old way after awhile. Some chick at work told me I was still handsome though.

Every time someone cuts their hair like that my initial thought is "who died??"

Three summers in a row of sweating my ass off with long hair was finally enough. Plus the vanity part. It was getting lots of grey in it and it was getting pretty uneven. I could never get it to grow past mid-back and I'd always wanted it really long like down to my waist. So I thought I'd just start over. It grows really fast so in a couple of months, I should have a decent pony tail again and hopefully fuller.

My chief will probably kill me though when she sees me at Fall Council.

You've got beautiful hair and it's good that you're donating it. Hey, it's a renewable resource, huh?

That chick at work is right :-)

Thanks! Give it a couple months and it will be shoulder length again anyway.

I think you look great without it!

I had it short like this for years. To be honest, growing it out was sort of a rebellion against a job that made us toe the corporate line and wear button down shirts and ties. I just needed a change. Thanks!

Both ways look nice. Glad it's being donated...that's always a fabulous thing to do with long hair like that if you opt to cut it uber-short.

My Grandpa Tom once met a Native American Chief in Arkansas who swore up and down and left and right that he'd NEVER EVER met a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Indian. Guess he doesn't live in the right part of the nation, eh? :D (one upon a time my hair was platinum blonde - now it's that dumpy ash blond/brown that many blondes suffer the fate of)

That chief in Arkansas was kidding himself. You meet a lot of traditional looking Natives still but there are an equal number of people who don't look Native at all. My great, great, great grandmother Sh'Na was half Shawnee and half Kickapoo. She married a guy who was 4th generation American but his family was Swiss for the most part. A generation later, everyone was blonde with blue eyes and they were all 1/4 Native. That's a lot higher blood percentage then many who claim to be Native can claim. When I go to my Nation's Council Meetings thee are plenty of blondes and brunettes there. Thanks for the compliment. It was just getting too hot to deal with in the summer. I can grow it back.

Looks good to me, mate. Amazing how different a person can feel after something so simple as lopping off some hair, isn't it? I take it you're feeling quite positive about your new look? (As you should be!)
Jul. 17th, 2008 04:05 pm (UTC)
Yes, it is amazing. I'm actually feeling naked but good. A medium told me 2 years ago that if I cut my hair and lost 30 pounds some very good things would happen. So now to lose the weight.

I go thru cycles...I like the way long hair looks and feels but once it gets to a certain point it just starts looking thin and ratty on me. The only time that I actually got my hair to the length I wanted and it looked nice and thick was when I was pregnant..but I wasn't going to stay pregnant forever, even for great hair :^) I was doing ok for awhile after that till the half-wild kids up the street gave us all headlice. LOP off went the hair and I couldn't even donate it. I'm back into a long cycle now..so we will see how it goes this time.

Have you tried growing it all long, even your bangs for a thicker pony tail? Would your current job frown on the in-between stages while it grew out?

Did you hear about the lady taking on the Texas school system because they wanted her to cut her sons waist length hair and she was saying she wouldn't because they were Native American and they consider their hair sacred and never cut it? I had not heard of that "belief" before.

Different tribes have different customs. Probably more of a clan thing but who knows. My big problem is I have curly hair. Ask Erik about the white boy afro I used to get in the summer when I let it all grow long. The mullet thing was a concession because as it got longer the weight kept it straighter. But my hair dresser lady says if I want to grow it long again, she will layer it to do so. I seem to remember you with long hair when you were younger.

you could always try the braided look until it all grows long enough to hang straighter. I had longer hair when Eric was in college but it got shorter and shorter as I added more jobs and classes to try and get thru college myself and then when I was working with the handicapped having long hair was a serious liability.

I like!
Jul. 17th, 2008 04:10 pm (UTC)
Certainly faster to get ready in the morning.

Jul. 17th, 2008 03:46 pm (UTC)
But...but...I didn't get my picture! (Well I guess I sort of did...)

Nice change. But all the hot long-haired men are cutting their ponytails. *whimper*
Jul. 17th, 2008 04:11 pm (UTC)
You know, I actually almost didn't do it because of you and the promise I made. But it will be longer when I see you next. Maybe not as long as it was but moreso than now. It grows pretty fast.

I bet your head feels about ten pounds lighter. *shakes chin-length hair that's trying to do a 60's flip*
Jul. 17th, 2008 04:13 pm (UTC)
It wasn't that heavy but what I notice is I don't have to constantly adjust when I'm sitting in a high backed chair. No more sitting on it or laying on it when I go to sleep. It's a bit strange to say but I was my hair with sweetgrass soap and the long hair would hold the scent most of the day. Sort of my personal potpouri. That's the biggest thing I miss.

Jul. 17th, 2008 04:47 pm (UTC)
That'll come back once it's long enough to get up close to your nose again.
Jul. 17th, 2008 09:40 pm (UTC)
Hmm.........you look very handsome either way...I've been debating about doing mine. I like it long because I can tie it up out of my neck in the summer.. maybe now I'll have the courage to walk in and say "take it off....take it all off!!!"

*bows head and does a silent salute to Mark's hacked off hair as it passes by...*
Jul. 18th, 2008 04:35 am (UTC)
Nope, women with long hair are definitely not allowed to cut it.

Jul. 18th, 2008 12:45 am (UTC)
i like it!
Jul. 18th, 2008 04:36 am (UTC)
That makes me a little more confident about it. When gorgeous women say they like it, it's all good.

Jul. 19th, 2008 02:56 pm (UTC)
VERY nice
Jul. 21st, 2008 04:37 pm (UTC)
Is that a VERY nice because it looked like HELL before?
