Trip Log

I'm back in Manassas, VA. My car has been white for 3 days due to hitting snow in the PA/WV mountains on Friday night. I'll find a car wash today. Eric and Karen pointed one out to me last night. Well Karen told me, Eric pointed. Eric took me for a ride in his Mini last night to buy steaks. Interesting if not enigmatic car. I spent Saturday with the mysterious jelly_fish at her home, where we consumed much mead, Illinois wine and hard cider spiked with champagne...and a good time was had by all.

Yesterday on the drive back, I got good shots of waterfalls and very old abandoned cabins, one with a woodburning cookstove in it. Today I'm visiting some local wineries and exploring backroads. Tomorrow I go to see my psychic/medium friend Bonny and have lunch with her.

Sarah, if you get this, email me at dierker@frontiernet.net. I forgot to bring your email. We may still have a chance to hook up but with the new job, I'm sure I'll be back soon and may land in a better place for a get together.

I'm torn as to what to do for Turkey Day. Eric and Karen have generously invited me to stay up here and have dinner with the family. My folks have said I could come down (350 miles South) and have dinner with them but they are going over to a neighbor's house to have dinner instead of making it themselves. I wouldn't mind so much, it's just a wasted day of driving down I-95, not the most scenic parts of the state and then another 300+ mile drive to the other side of the state so I can go to Winter Council on Saturday and then a 700+ mile drive home on Sunday. I mean I like driving and all but even I can get a little tired.

Mileage-wize and time spent with friends-wize, it makes more sense to stay in Northern Virginia. I just hate to miss opportunities to spend time with my folks when we've been getting along so well the past few years. But then again, we will see each other in less than a month for Christmas too. I'll figure it out.

Hmm. Hard cider and sparkling wine is a new concept for me; I'll have to try it some time. What are the proper proportions? ...I do, however, rather like half Johnny and half oatmeal stout. It's a delightful winter combination.

About 4 to 1 cider to sparkling. You don't want the wine to overpower the cider kind of just want it to carbonate it with a hint of the wine taste.

Yes, anything French does indeed tend to be both overpowering and oppressive unless utilized in moderation. if at all. I suppose you won't object too much if I substitute Spanish cava, or better yet a good Missouri sparkling wine? Most of the current French wines are from Missouri grapestock anyway, since the Frogs done let themselves get blighted out.

Substitute as you see fit.

Who, and where is Bonnie, your medium/psychic? Also, I got your email. I'll be working through Wednesday, so I don't believe we can get together. But thanks for remembering. Fill me in on your visit with Bonnie. And the rest of your travels as well. :)

Bonny Paulson lives in Huntly near Flint Hill. I have to go through Warrenton to get there. Her and her husband own a couple rental cabins back in the woods and this huge house they live in. Very picturesque setting. She's a very gifted medium and psychic. Sometimes tells me what I don't want to hear but always tells me what I need to know.

Ask Bonnie if there's a spirit suggestion around Thanksgiving.

When I read this I felt like I should call my pal who's from an old Tidewater Virginia family and ask for an invitation for you -- but I don't think it's THAT family -- something old and intergenerational waits for your Virgina adventuring dinner.

It was indeed old and intergenerational. I talked through her to my great, great grandfather and to my great, great, great granduncle. Very illuminating, I'll be writing about it soon.

It was awesome to see you! Hope it is not another year before it happens again!

It won't be.
