Magic of ebay

Thanks to the wonderful goodness that is Ebay, my friend Buddy Morse who will turn 85 on August 10, will be getting a signed copy of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. I even beat a collector out in the bidding. Deb's Dad will make a nice glass shadow box for it. I'll be heading to NM in the first week of August if anyone cares.

Oddly enough, I'll be in New Mexico during the first week of August, too. Want to climb Wheeler or something?

I could go for a cold Fat Tire and a good chat in some nice watering hole with Patsy Cline on the Jukebox. I climbed Wheeler years ago when I was in shape. I'd probably make it now but at some point I'd be telling you to go on and I'd catch up. Anymore it takes me about half of my vacation to really get used to the altitude. This is what years of being poor with no health insurance and getting pneumonia will do for your lungs.

Aw heck, if you're stopping here in Fanta Se land, I can you do one better. There's a really great local brewpub (with an outstanding ESB) that pretty much nightly provides live music. Not exactly Ms. Cline, usually, but the music's usually pretty decent, and the brew always top-notch.

As for the Wheeler gig, my girl in Cali has recently reintroduced me to the illegal-for-sale-in-NM clove cigarette. Not to mention my cigar habit. But really, I hike fast on my own - real fast - but my best hiking partner since Deva and I broke up was pretty out of shape. Thing was though, she didn't have to talk all the damned time. And I was quite content to slow down and pay even more attention to my surroundings. If you want to hike Wheeler, I'll be content with your pace. Unless you're faster than me. In which case, I'll keep up. Somehow.

I've got lots of NM pix to take for work so I think I will be down SF way. Don't you know those cloves will kill you? I used to supply them to a young lass in Utah for the same reason. We'll see about Wheeler. I'm quite sure I won't be faster than you. In 2005 we did a re-seeding project at Philmont a few years after the forest fires up there. Had I realized we had to climb to the ridge above Indian Writings Camp I probably wouldn't have attempted it. As it was it was like a classic survival flick with me saying, "you go on, I'll just slow you down!" to this pair of 72 year old men. I found myself thinking that if I passed out, they would have to carry me down. Once I got up there I had no problems and going down was fine but that climp up...oy vey! Then again, I climb all over the ridges around the Continental Divide when I go elk hunting with the ex inlaws in CO so who knows.

Given the number of other health-detrimental things in which I partake, I assure you the clove cigarettes will not be my death. And I rather like them. And attractive young women never make me feel or become old.

But the point is I'm pretty malleable regarding such trips. And I'm also quite willing to just hit the local brewpub.
