Someone must be telling me to slow down. I left work at 2 on Thursday and got on the Interstate South. I looked at my gas gauge and thought it would be very embarassing to run out of gas in the midst of pre-holiday gridlock so I took the next exit and stopped to get gas. Then the car wouldn't start and wouldn't you know it would be the starter which is twice as expensive as a starter on an American car. But it is original equipment on a car that has nearly 200,000 miles so I guess I can't complain too much.

A tow truck driver just happened to come into the gas station as I was asking about towing services. So the tow from Westmont to Joliet cost $135. A rental car for the weekend cost me $153 because of holiday pricing. It rained during all 4 of our fireworks shows. The 2 on Saturday had to be canceled because it was pouring. We rescheduled for Sunday and of course it was hot and humid because of the rain from the previous days.

An old sort of ex-friend came back on the team and it was kind of like David Lee Roth coming back to Van Halen. Same old David Lee. But we made it work. Rob had to be at work at 6 am Monday and 5 hours away so I doubt he got any sleep as we didn't finish the Sunday shows until almost midnight. I had to be up and gone by 4 am so I didn't get much sleep either. Worked all day in a blue funk and fell asleep a couple of times. When I went to return the car, Deb was supposed to pick me up but couldn't get her car out from behind mine which was still dead in the driveway. So I walked home. It wasn't too bad. Just 2 miles but if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't choose Florsheim Wingtips to walk 2 miles in.

I worked on the car until dark and when the mosquitos started eating me alive. Got the old starter off and bought another one for $135. Went out this morning to try and put the new starter in. Remembered how much I hat installing VW starters because you have to jack up the transaxle to get hte bolts to go back through. Didn't get finished before work so I had to take Deb's car which is pretty much held together with rust. But it got me to work. Now I get to go home and try and align all the bolt holes again. Hopefully I can drive my own car tomorrow.

Oh and I caught fire Friday night.

Caught Ice in the winter, caught Fire in the summer... I think that makes you well rounded and well-warded.

Good luck with the starter. Those things are a bitch.

I could do without the ice but I wouldn't trade the fire. Long about dark teh retaining bolts finally found their threads and the starter is now installed. Fired up on the first try. Great to have my baby back.

I had a friend once whose car was held together with epoxy cement and paper towels. Rather beyond rust. It was pretty cool, actually...

My last VW, both front door latches were sprung and I had to hold them shut with a bungee cord. If you turned to sharp a corner the doors would open a bit until you got straight again. I drive cars until they just won't go any more.

It's just life. I got the new starter on tonight and she's going again. Friday night I have an artist reception for my newest photo show. Saturday morning I head to Iowa to pick up a couple thousand dollars worth of fireworks. I can't drink all day because I have to light the fireworks. But I'll make up for it afterward.

My car's thermostat had to be replaced today; guess we're in the same wavelength lately ;)

I don't even want to think about my thermostat going out as you have to remove the water pump to get to it. Have fun.
