What I learned from my move

Finished moving yesterday. Well almost. Had to rent a storage unit to hold all the stuff we still want to keep as opposed to the multiple bags of stuff we decided we could do without and set out on the curb. Here's what I learned.

1. 2 bottles of red wine will appear to vaporize when they fly out of your cooler at 70 mph and make contact with the highway right in front of the semi you just passed.

2. We have way too much shit. Threw away 35 lawn and leaf trash bags of stuff and still had enough to fill up a 5 x 10 x 10 storage unit even after stuffing a 17 foot u-haul truck full the previous week.

3. It will inevitably start to rain just when you start loading furniture into the open bed of the truck.

4. 30 + hours without sleep makes for a really tough day on Monday.

5. If the motel you are staying at has mirrored ceiling and wall, the bed is probably not going to be that comfortable.

6. If the same motel has an option to rent by the hour, you don't want to actually sleep under the covers.

7. You should add at least 4 hours onto any estimate of time it will take to clean a house when you move.

8. The rain that is soaking the furniture in your truck is also flooding the basement.

9. Clorox cleans everything.

10. You will never, under any circumstances ever get your full security deposit back.

Worst of it was it happened 20 miles from home. It was not cheap wine either.

The motel..OMG! *shudder*

Can't decide whether to be sorry about the wine or admiring about the total vaporization. Hella scary though.

You know when you are driving in the rain and you look in your side view mirror and see all the spray coming off the back end of your car? The two bottle flew up and hit the road and it was like seeing two eruptions of spray come up from the road.

*scribbles notes*

I don't plan to move, but ya never know...

Sadly, you probably needed that wine by the time all was said and done.

I can't drink red wine for the same reason I can't eat chocolate nut I had been saving it as a gift for my boss for letting me transfer to Dubuque so I'll have to dip into my stash of whites I guess. This was a particularly traumatic move. How we accumulated so much stuff in the last 3 years I'll never know.

Nope, I'm on Food_porn I think. I've been too busy to take food pix of late. This winter when it's harder to get out is when I'll take more pics inside.

Connie and Jim moved in 20 days, including finding the house. Good income and two engineers makes that a very different circumstance. Jim's full time job was house hunting and packing and they USED PODS!!!! http://www.pods.com/ I have read about PODS for years but never even seen one -- alas that I move in circles where either moving is a specialty that you hire someone ELSE to do OR (as in my life) the cost of using PODS is higher than the aggregated values of the stuff.

From making the decision to take the new house to actually moving in was less than a month. The only problem with PODS with me is I rent and the house I'm moving into would have no room to place a POD in the property. Not to mention the cost.

That's quite a list. Feeling for you on #3-7, 8, and 10 -- re: #10, at least you didn't expect much from it anyway. I held a private memorial for the wine... I know you had plans for it!

It was a present for my boss is all. At least the beer was saved. I've not heard from the old landlord on what I will get back but I doubt it will be the full amount.
