By virtue of an unexpected and very cheap flight that came my way, I will be heading to the Northern Virginia area on Friday. American Airlines emailed me to let me know I could get a flight from the Dubuque airport to Dulles for $172. I was saving vacation days to split between trips to Oregon and or to NoVA but the trip to Oregon would have been 3 times as much and I'm just a little strapped for cash right now. So that will have to wait until the first part of next year. As it is, this will be a pretty short trip for me. December 11-15 and I'll be traveling back on the 15th. And yes, it's one of those goofy flights where you fly backwards to go forwards. In this case, East to O'Hare and then Southwest to St. Louis and then Northeast to Dulles. Oh well, it's cheap and with the origination flight in Dubuque, going through security won't be near as bad.

After that, I'm driving to NC on December 21 and will be there through Christmas. Anyone feel like a visit?

I got part of my security deposit back from my former deadbeat landlord. Of course you never agree on what they expect. They had told me not to bother to clean much because they were going to make some major repairs. Still we spent a weekend cleaning and even left them some nice stuff like an armoire and a new dorm size refrigerator and a lawnmower. Do you think any of that mattered? No, they still wrote us a letter telling us how they had to have the house cleaned after they did the repairs...like the repairs they wanted to make were our fault. The roof leaked when we moved in. We notified them several times it was still leaking...they didn't want to spend the money to really fix it so they kept patching in. It kept leaking. So now they take part of my security deposit to fix it? The basement had a habit of flooding. We told them whenever it happened. They opted to respond by telling us to remove the self adhesive carpet squares so mold wouldn't grow. Damned if I didn't get charged for those carpet squares being removed. And they charged us $5 for each corner that had a cobweb in it. Like cobwebs hurt anything. So from a $975 security deposit we got back $250...*heavy sigh* Plus he had the audacity to tell me he had paid my final water bill like he expected me to reimburse him. Hello! The city of Joliet sent me a final bill which was not due yet. So if you paid it for me, I'll be considering it a Christmas gift and just say thanks!

So that went toward rent on the new house...or paying for the new camera. Take your pick.

Have I said home much I like living in this new place? I don't know it it's the new carpets or the complete remodel before I moved in or just a really cool landlord but I feel so much more comfortable here.

Peace,

Wander

I'd go to the small claims court and get the rest of the money. I mean, I did when they try that trick on me. All this sounds so familiar and so fishy.

If I hadn't just moved to another state, I would. There were a lot of things fishy with the arrangement. For the last 4 months we were no longer under a lease. We had always dealt with his daughter who ran his realty business. Then all of a sudden he's coming back and telling us what we did wrong or didn't do right. We had such issues with them while living there, it's almost easier just to be rid of them than to have to go through the mess of suing them.

I was going to suggest small claims court also, but I do understand how it's more of a hassle than it's worth when you're out of state. It's too bad you paid the last month's rent.

I think there should be a special place in hell for landlords like that guy.

I've had a few landlords like that myself, as if one isn't enough. I even got the cobweb comment, and sticky kitchen floor (after being mopped and cleaned). Deducted from my security deposit for that. He told me he was going to clean the place anyway. Sleazy jerks.

Yeah, I think the rule is you never get the security deposit back so you might as well not hope for it. The previous one gave us much more back and what he didn't was basically because he had gone gambling and was broke. We had been in that house for 8 years and he loved the fact that we did our own repairs and took care of problems so he didn't have to. Contrast that with the most recent jerk. Another of his complaints was we had not trimmed the hedges recently. Our lease actually specified he had a lawn care service that was supposed to do that so I never did. He got cheap after the first year and fired his lawn care service but never rewrote the lease. His bad, not mine but I still paid for it. Oh well.

I'll be in Northern Va at the end of the week. Don't you live around there somewhere?

I'm holding out faith that one of these years your visit through my neck of the woods will coincide with me having a great deal of flexibility, time and energy to share with you!
