Assisitance close to home

I don't often advertise this way but it seems like the right thing to do. Winter is hard on many reservations every year but especially this year and in the wake of the Haiti situation, this has not received much coverage. A huge storm hit the Pine Ridge Reservation in December and left them with several feet of snow. Contact was cut off to ailing elders and so on. Utility companies have been pulling meters for non-payment even though this is illegal in other parts of the country. So if you would like to help out, here is some info:

Warm Coats - Sweaters - Jackets - Blankets... You name it! There is a place you can send them - today.

There are hundreds of families including small children all the way up to very elderly in South Dakota that need help right now. We ask that you talk to your family, co-workers, churches, coaches and teachers. Look in your closets for those warm items that are not being used and send them out.

Many families cannot afford to pay their electricity bills and have their electricity meters taken away on a daily basis. These people are among the poorest of the communities in the U.S. They are relying on warm clothing to keep them warm as well as donations made directly to the electric & propane company. Can you help?

All donations are greatly appreciated and accepted at:

Pine Ridge Emergency Relief
C/O Dean Patton
PO Box 2070

The Electric & Propane Company will take debit, credit card and check donations for those on the list provided to them who are in need of immediate assistance. The utility companies will provide you with a confirmation number and receipt.

I've heard first hand about the Rosebud Reservation School and I was abhorred. I'm all for helping our Native Americans.

Thank you for posting this, W. Can you tell me who administer donations to Rosebud?

Was happy that there was something I could do, after I heard about the snowfall predictions, and the resulting blackouts, and the transportation systems being shut down, not to mention the hand-to-hand propane deliveries; I was glad to hear the call go out on many channels, most of whom also pointed out that the Bureau of Indian Affairs didn't even call an emergency session to appropriate the federal funds that are available for disasters like this. Bad situation.
