A Wandering we will go

I'm off a wandering again soon. Looking for rural ruins and magic in the moonlight. My plan right now is to leave Dubuque this Friday afternoon after work and drive towards Colorado Springs on I-80. I'll likely take a break around Omaha or Lincoln, NE and then get a little farther down the road before I stop for the night. Leave the Interstate around Kearny and take the back roads across the rest of NE and parts of CO until I meet up with I-70 which I'll take in to Colorado Springs. I have a reunion there on Saturday night of the people who worked on my college newspaper from the mid 80's to the early 2000's. Then Sunday I'm back on the road. Taking the backroads over the mountains and then up to Eagle, CO to meet with I-70 once more. Through Grand Junction and then up to Provo, UT and Salt Lake City on US Rt 6. I-15 to Ogden and I-84 to Boise. Planning to go through Boise on Monday. I-82 and I-90 up to Seattle where I hope to be on Tuesday morning. Deliver the guitar I made for my brother, bum around the market and then head down the coast highways to San Francisco. Then back on I-80 through Reno and out across Nevada, Utah and CO, Nebraska and back home by the following Sunday. Somewhere around 5,000 miles in 9 days. If anyone would like me to stop for a visit please let me know and I'll do my best.

EDIT - I took a look at Google Maps and actually planned a tentative route so here it is:

Friday, June 17 - Dubuque to Kearny, NE - 531 mi
Saturday, June 18 - Kearney, NE to Colorado Springs, CO 429 mi
South Coloradan Newspaper Reunion Saturday Night
Sunday, June 19 - CO. Springs to Twin Falls, ID - 786 mi
Monday, June 20 - Twin Falls, ID to Seattle, WA - 629 mi
Tuesday, June 21 - Spend time with my brother and hit the market and breweries
Wednesday, June 22 - Seattle to Coos Bay, OR - 422 mi
with a stop in Newport, OR to eat fabulous seafood somewhere and drink some Rogue Ales
Thursday, June 23 - Coos Bay, OR to San Francisco, CA 527 mi
Probably have dinner with my Aunt or cousins. Breakfast the next morning at the Griffin Hotel in SF.
Friday, June 24 - San Francisco to Salt Lake City, UT - 736 mi
Saturday, June 25 - Salt Lake City to Kearney, NE - 755 mi
Sunday, June 26 - Kearney, NE to Dubuque, IA - 531 mi

For a total of 5,335 miles in 9 days.

Peace,

Wander

Sounds like quite a trip. I am unfortunately in survival mode, which means working as much as I can and then work on finding more work.

I'll be back later in the summer, either July or August for a week in NM and CO so I'll try to seek you out then.

wow .. how are you allowed to take so much time off work? Is this all paid holiday? I'm so jealous.

Yes, all paid vacation. I'm only taking off 5 days. 4 of the days are weekend. I have 23 paid vacation days a year. I could take them all in a row and have over a month off if i wanted to. I think the company would frown on it though.

Hey thanks. There has already been an adjustment to the route so I'm just going with the flow from now on.

We recently discovered that there's a meadery in Santa Clara if you have time for a stop that-a-way. Rabbit's Foot Meadery. :) Tasting room and everything, just in front of the brewery. It's a tiny little operation.

To be honest, I'm working enough that it's probably not worth even trying. Maybe after we IPO. ;)

I'm just catching up on my lj--but if you are really serious about taking the backroads of Nebraska, you should stop and see Carhenge near Alliance.

Valentine is cool, too.
