So I don't miss another year
A friend sent me an email to remind me I hadn't posted in a year and wondering if I was still out there. Yes, I am. Like so many of us, 2020 has been a shit storm of a year. I managed to keep an art gallery open for a year in Dubuque, IA amid the pandemic. And I'm now the primary person in charge of it. I'm in the midst of remodeling the 20 x 65' space to fit my needs and I'm hopeful it will become a moneymaker in the new year.
I've had to get 3 Covid tests this year and had to isolate for 2 weeks twice now. I'm pretty careful about precautions. I'm not an anti-masker at all. But I'm also not going to stop living and stay inside all the time. Mostly the course of my life does not bring me in contact with other people so I don't have much fear of contracting or spreading disease. The two instances where I had to isolate were a result of others not following the rules.
I spent about 3 months of this year in North Carolina helping out my parents. My Mom, who is 82 was hospitalized in April and then again in June due to potassium deficiencies. It was the June incident that most worried everyone. My Dad thought he'd lost her. She was in the ICU for 6 days and in a private room for another 5 and then transferred to a rehab facility for over a month where we could only communicate through a window with a cell phone. So I was there for almost 2 months in June/July and another month in October/November. Got some nice photography done but completely dropped the ball on the upkeep of the family farm in Illinois for the year.
Now I've got several trees down and weeds everywhere. Plus someone broke into the garage and stole 3 chainsaws and an air compressor in July because they could tell no one was there. I'll have lots of work to do in the Spring.
The international art gallery scene has been hit an miss this year. So many venues have just closed up and are waiting out the pandemic and lots have just gone to virtual showings. Pretty hard to convince people to buy art when they can't see it first. Though I did sell 3 of the same edition of a nude image at Seattle Erotic Art Festival this year. That was a nice paycheck.
This year it's been a case of whenever I really was almost flat out broke, I'd sell a piece of art so I was able to just keep on getting by.We just got our 2nd blizzard of more than 8 inches of snow this month. I'm so ready for Winter to be over and it has just started. No guarantees on 2021 but hopefully it's better than this year.
