Re:
Some Christian you are. The 12 days of Christmas are the 12 days between Christmas day on December 25 adn the Epiphany on January 6. Tradition used to hold that you gave gifts on all 12 days rather than lumping them all together on the 25th like we do now.

Christmas is Sometimes spelled Xmas because the Greek spelling of Christ is Xtos so it caught on in old Europe to write it Xmas.

Here are my guesses.

The 12 days of Christmas start on Dec. 25th and end Jan. 6th. Two things I was brought up to believe about that. Jan 6 = day the wisemen came to see Jesus and if you don't take your decorations down by Jan 6, the elves will mess up your house.

Xmas was started by non-Christians whom didn't want Christ in Christmas, therefore they abbreviated it with Xmas. I thought X stood for Christ in some language, maybe that's because of the X-mas thing. I used to sign my name Xena (short for Christina) before Xena the Princess Warrior came out.

Those are just my guesses. :)

Re:
The first guess is pretty much right. There are 12 days between Christmas Day and the Epiphany on January 6. Old tradition had it that you gave gifts on all 12 Days. The 12 Days song has a completely different set of symbolism though but since I'm not Christian, I won't bother expounding.

The second guess is what I was always taught but I found out it goes back way further than that. The Greek spelling of Christ is Xtos so it caught on in 15th Century Europe to write Xmas instead of Christmas. My take on that whole not wanting Christ in Christmas thing is it was a Christian Holiday long before all the politically correct assholes came along so if they don't want ot associate it with Christ, they should call it something else and just give each other presents if they want. That's about like saying they don't want Thanks in Thanksgiving because they don't have anything to be thankful for. I'm not a Christian but I don't have any problem calling it Christmas.

I just remember my mother(whom was Christian) would be highly offended if I called it Xmas.

The twelve days of Christmas are what my dad invokes whenever we put up the tree. It may not ever come down before January 6 because that would be breaking the 12DOC. Helps that we don't put it up until December 20 or so.

It's spelled Xmas because X is the lonliest letter that you'll ever see. For Christmas, we let it come out to play.

One of the above is false.

Re:
Heheheheheh. Great answers though. Right after Xmas, I'm always driving around going, "OK folks you can take the lights down now!" Some people leave them up 'till Easter.

I love the people who leave them up all year. "Yep. I put up the lights 'round 'bout '72 and they've been up there evers since. Right purty they are, sittin' there all not-lighted in the middle of July."
