Art Question

OK, A question for any of you painter types out there. My grandma, may she rest in peace, was a apinter and a very good one at that. I've got 21 of her paintings hanging about my house. Recently while cleaning out the barn, I found one of her earlier works. In all truthfulness, she probably put it out there because she didn't think it was that good. Anyway, I'd like to preserve it. It's done in either oil or acrylic with some really nice blues, reds and greens. But it's also caked with some dirt as well. More than likely the dirt consists of regular old dirt and chicken shit. Any idea how I can get the dirt off without destroying the paint underneath?

Deb fell in the kitchen last night. She'd gone inside to get something while we were raking the back yard. She slipped on a throw rug on her way abck out and fell backwards, hurting her hip. One of her cleaner comments was "Ohhhhhh, I wish I was 20 again!" To which I replied, "So do I, then I would be sleeping with a 20 year-old instead of a 31 year-old!" So I'm still trying to appologize my way out of that one today.

Peace,

Wander

I'm not really sure about the painting, I have a friend who might know, but way to put your foot in your mouth!! Good luck with that one. Plead temporary insanity... that's all you can do! LOL!!! Hope she feels ok.

That's why I love reading my friends in the morning, it's very entertaining this early.

Re:
I was actually joking about it and normally a comment like that would have just gotten me the finger but not yesterday. She's still not in a joking mood today.

Re: OUCH!!!
Guess I won't be gettin' any before Xmas. It will either be the hip excuse or the comment excuse. I should really learn to think before I speak sometimes.

Nah, it's a male thing. Anything that we think is funny on the spur of the moment is sure to piss off any female no matter how we say it. Best thing to do is leave it alone and bring many presents.

I've been waiting on her like a manservant. I guess that's a good start.

If it makes you feel any better, I would have laughed. I am laughing, actually.

Re:
Well, I bought her a new kitten this weekend and all that seems to be forgotten. Never underestimate the power of a good bribe!

Re: paint restoration
I am not positive what the best thing to use is to restore a painting.. My mom is a painter too but I dont recall how she cleaned old paintings... your best bet is to call a museum or auction house and ask for the curator... then ask them. They might not be forth coming but you never know... if that fails go to an art supplies store and ask about. :P

Goodluck!

Re: paint restoration
Thanks much. I had a go at it with a clean cloth and some water this weekend and got a surprising amount of it off without taking the paint. I may just have to consult a currator from here though.

Peace,

Wander
