That time of year

It's the time of winter I get bored and go int o serious jam/jelly making mode. So last night, I whipped up a batch of Strawberry/blackberry jam. I only combined them because I didn't have enough Strawberries left in the freezer. These were fresh at one time. I picked them fresh in Mount Olive, NC back in July and brought them home and froze them whole. The blackberries were from my vines out back. This batch made 10 pints. 7 are spoken for so I have 3 I could give away. If anyone wants some, speak up. Problem now is, I won't have enough blackberries for a whole batch so I'll have to combine those with something else. Either apricots or peaches. I'll probably make 3 batches this weekend. I've got enough peach to combine with the blackberries and still have enough for a batch of peach. Then I've got the juice I made from my concord grapes off the arbor, in a sealed bowl in the freezer. I was going to make wine but I probably don't have enough, so jelly it is. I'll get my aunt to make me a loaf of homemade bread and one of my cousins still makes her own sweet cream butter. Then I'll gorge myself on bread, butter and jam all weekend.

I was thinking of making jam or jelly from something really unusual. I've made cactus jelly, bourbon jelly and pepper jelly before so I was trying to think of an unusual vegetable to try and make jelly with. Maybe something like artichoke jam or carrot jam or even corn jelly. If anyone has any suggestions for me to try, just let me know. I tried persimmon jelly a couple years back. Believe me, it's nasty. And I found out mulberries make good jelly but not good jam. Too damn many seeds.

I might even try to make some herbal jelly. Problem with herbs is getting either enough plant matter or enough juice to do anything with.

oh well, let me know if you have any ideas.

Peace,

Wander

Huh?
I wonder if this will happen to me too when I get older? Will I spend my time packaging jelly and yelling at whippersnappers?

Re: Huh?
Depends. Then again, you have more friends around close than I do so that might give you something to do. This is just my down time season. The rest of the year is pretty full for me.

Re: Huh?
You'll end up as the crazy old guy on the front porch with a Confederate rifle and a coon hound. "Git off mah yard ya damn kids!"

Re: Huh?
You give me no credit. Confederate rifles were pieces of crap. I do however plan to have a shotgun mounted on my wheelchair in case my greedy younguns ever try to put me in an old folks home for my money.

Grapefruit jelly? Tomato? Lettuce?

Re:
I might try grapefruit. tomato might be good too as sugar on tomatoes tastes pretty good. If I make lettuce jelly, you have to help me eat it.

Lettuce jelly would be for the gerbils. Keeps them from dehydrating if I forget to refill the water bottle.

Re:
You could make gerbil jerky if they deydrated. It might be a good thing.

No making jerky from my gerbils! They're too cute! They're lilac gerbils!

Re:
Yeah, they wouldn't make much of a meal anyway. Not even a snack really.

Do not mock the mighty gerbil for they have sharp pointy teeth that like to bite into salty things like human hands. That's a pain that lingers.

Re:
My ex wife used to have these damn gerbils and hamsters. All I can really remember of them is they bit hard as hell and they would wait until 3 in the morning to get on their little wheel and make noise all night long.

Mine don't run in the wheel. Tim has a crooked tail that looks like it got broken in a wheel once (this happened to a baby gerbil back before I could tell boys from girls so I know what it looks like). The most they ever do is knock it over. I take the wheel out before I go to bed anyways.

And the way to prevent bites is to give them a salt lick. That's really all they're after.

One got into a boot of mine one night and in the morning whe nI was getting ready for work, I found him a little too late with my foot. He did go down fighting though. Bit me between the toes.

I put a gerbil in my pocket once while I was practicing viola back in the Harvey days. (Harvey was my first viola.) Poor little thing fell down to the bottom of the pocket and suffocated in just a couple of minutes. I still feel bad about that.

My bro has a ferret that waits till earlyearly morning (like zero-dark-thirty) to drink from her bottle... it's hilarious because it's one of those hangy-upside-downy (yeah, I know... inverted) bottles and the out-tube is stainless steel (noise conductive) with a little stainless ball-bearing that falls into the tip to keep it sealed. Now, with a little imagination, I'm sure you can hear the rapid-fire clickittyclicking of a little furbearing thief's tongue as it thirstily laps at the water-bottle.....

Yeah, we had one of those for a kitten once. Didn't take me too long to lose the water bottle.

Think that's bad? Terry used to chew through the bottle. I got them a glass bottle and he chewed through the rubber cork for it too. I finally ended up getting them a metal guard for the bottle. It bangs against the side of the cage while they're trying to dig through glass.
