Signs of Spring

muse wrote about signs of Spring today and was much more eloquent than I will be. Two things I noticed this morning. Emos was open and so was Height's Flowers. Emos is a Peoria landmark that has been open since the 1950's. It's an old drive in that now sells some pretty darned good ice cream, chilli dogs and hamburgers. There was a convertible 57 Chevy with original paint and interior pulled up out front this morning when I came in to work, giving a certain nostalgic flair to the place. On the first day they are open, money from all sales goes to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital. So even though it's only 45 outside, I'll be going down this afternoon for a big frosty vanilla shake.

Height's flowers sit's on the side of Prospect Avenue in Peoria Heights, nearwhat I call the fru-fru section of the Heights. In otehr words, the section with the coffee shops and the Spotted Cow Ice Cream Shoppe where a cone will cost you $3.50 unlike the $1.25 they charge you at Emos four blocks down Prospect. Height's flowers is a greenhouse kind of setup. Open air completely and subject to all the nasty Spring weather. But they have the prettiest flowers and plants. We probably spent $400 on plants there last year for the yard at our city house. They are only open until like late June. When Summer comes, they shut down and go back to their permanent site across the river in East Peoria. I'm not sure why they are called Height's flowers since they are technically based in East Peoria and not Peoria Heights but hell, as long as they keep up with the quality of their flowers, they could call themselves Shit On A Stick and I'd still but from them.

Yep, Spring is finally here.

For those of you who were hoping for a rant from me about my work, you can stop holding your breath. I've calmed down a bit. The head of our department stuck her head in my office this morning and told me not to be upset about it. She said everyone realized it was a joke. Still, I have a meeting with my supervisor later today where I'm going to vent a little at least.

Peace,

Wander

My personal signs of springtime in Baltimore City . . .
Jenny stands alone in the last lemony rays of sunshine marking the sunset on the corner of Patapsco and Hanover. The blossoms are in full bloom and a vibrant breeze stains her cheeks petal pink and drifts her hair into chestnut and raven ropes. Her eyes are shattered reflections of a peaceful, April sky.

HONK HONK!

*wolf whistles and cayote bays from a nearby, squealing car, the randy white males inside shouting out endearments such as "baby girl"*

The curious mystery of spring disappears from Jenny's eyes as they turn dull and bored, an eyebrow raising and a wry, cynical grin spreading across her chapped lips.

"Yep," she ruefully comments to strangers looking at her oddly in pity, "It's officially Spring."

Yep, spring is certainly here. The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, the wind is blowing, my nose is raw from the El Cheapo tissues. Feh on store brand tissues. And there are chicks and ducklings at the feed store! For cute!

Trust me, the bad stuff hasn't started yet. Next month the pecan trees start and there's one right outside my bedroom window. You haven't seen grumpy until you've seen me battling a pecan tree allergy.

Re:
We have cottonwoods around here. Just as bad except cottonwood fluff you can actually see what's making you sneeze. Small consolation.

You were amazingly eloquent in your post. Oddly, I've heard about Emo's from so many people and I have never been there. It's on my list of places to go, however.

You are welcome down here anytime. Especially in July when it's 98 degrees adn the humidity is 82%. It's more like drinking the air than breathing. Gotta love it.

Well, we get the same sort of summer up here, and I find it quite unpleasant. Makes me ill actually. But thanks for the offer. :)
